STUDENT ELECTIVES
Neurology Elective Proposal:
I. Descriptive Information
Title:MED 545-N Neurology
Department: MEDICINE
Pre-requisite: Credit in Medicine 531/532, Only University of Hawaii 4th year medical students accepted for this elective
Duration: 4 weeks (block to be arranged)

II. Objectives
1. To increase skill in the recognition and management of patients with neurological problems in adults and children.
2. To increase skill in the use of neurological examination and the indications and interpretation of neurological diagnostic tests including radiographic procedures, brain imaging, electroencephalography, and electromyography.
III. Locations (please note that students will be assigned to Neurology preceptors based on preceptor availability)
Kaiser Foundation Hospital: Direct student supervision in handling cases of adult and child neurology in a major hospital clinic. Major emphasis on clinical approach, diagnostic follow-up, management, and planning for chronic as well as acute neurological cases. Exposure and training in all procedures used in diagnosis. Outside reading will be prescribed and a seminar paper presentation is mandatory.
Kuakini Medical Center - Tutorial with either Dr. Yee, Kimata or Shimamoto. Students will be exposed to a busy adult general neurology practice. Students will participate in new outpatient evaluations, follow-ups and hospital consultations.
Queen's Medical Center: Consultative Neurology with Dr. Michael Watters where students participate in inpatient and outpatient consults, Neuro Intensive Care, stroke team call, and conferences which include a variety of clinical, imaging and research neurology topics.
Hawaii Center for Sleep Medicine: Consultative Sleep Medicine with Dr. Barthlen. Scoring of sleep studies and performing sleep studies (PSG & MSLT) with sleep technicians under supervision of Dr. Barthlen.
IV. Evaluation
1. The student's performance will be assessed by ongoing evaluation of the student's acquisition of knowledge and application of this to patient care.
2. There will be no formal examination, except for pre-test/post-test at Queen's Medical Center.
3. All students will be expected to complete and return the elective form to the Department of Medicine.
V. Only University of Hawaii medical students are accepted for this elective.
IV. Awards
Students who complete this elective may be eligible for the American Academy of Neurology Student Prize for Excellence in Neurology Award.
1. Eligibility criteria:
a. Completed an elective in Neurology
b. Demonstrated excellence in clinical neurology during the elective.
c. If more than one student fulfills the above criteria, then the student who showed the most promise for a career in neurology will be given further consideration.
2. Selection:
a. by a committee chaired by Dr. Robert Bart
b. before March 15 of the 4th year
3. Award amount: $200
