STUDENT ELECTIVES

MED 546-D Infectious Diseases

            Pre-requisite:  Credit in Medicine 531/532

            Duration:  4 weeks (all blocks)

            Number of Students:  Minimum - 1; Maximum - 2

            Location(s): 

Tripler Army Medical Center: Dr. Tomas Ferguson and Dr. Joshua Hawley

              Private Office & Queen's, Hawaii Medical Center-East, Kuakini Medical Center, Pali Momi and Kapiolani Medical Center: Drs. Willis Chang, William Lau, Russell Wong

II.     Objectives

            The major objective of the program is to acquaint the student with the ways in which patients with infections present to physicians, clinical features which should make physicians suspect infection, the proper approach to the patient for the purpose of diagnosing infection and the general concept of treating infectious diseases.  Additionally, emphasis will be placed on the interpretation of laboratory and microbiologic data as applicable to the practicing physician and appropriate antibiotic selection and utilization.

III.     Method

              Emphasis will be given to a close working relationship with the attending physician in both ambulatory and in-patient consultations and a further development of the clinical skills necessary for a successful internship.  the student will evaluate one patient daily and will present to the staff.  Emphasis will be placed on clinical skills, development of an understanding of antibiotics, major infectious disease syndrome, basic microbiology skills, basic radiology, and review of current literature pertaining to infectious disease encountered during the rotation.  The student will be expected to follow closely and evaluate daily each patient that he/she is following.  Attendance at the UH Infectious Disease Grand Rounds is mandatory. Kaiser students will participate in the antibiotic infusion clinic, and clinics treating patients with Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV.

IV.     Evaluation

            1. Ongoing evaluation by the supervising physician will be used to assess the student's acquisition of knowledge and application of this to patient care.  There will be no formal examination.

            2. To obtain credit for this elective, all students must complete and return the elective evaluation form to the Department of Medicine.
