STUDENT ELECTIVES
MED 545 I General Internal Medicine - Inpatient

Pre-requisite: Credit in Medicine 531/532, only UH medical students will be accepted for this elective
Duration: 4 weeks (available all blocks)

II. Objectives
This elective is specifically designed for students who need to demonstrate and achieve R (resident) level competence in Knowledge, Clinical Skills and/or Habits and Attitudes in order to receive credit for MED 541 (Advanced Medicine). The elective is also designed for students who are required to complete a remediation program as determined by the Department of Medicine Student Education Committee.
III. Method
Queen's Medical Center: The student will function as an intern with the exception of being subject to the same counter-signature restrictions as third-year medical students. The student will be expected to apply evidenced-based medicine to patient evaluation and treatment plans, write more advanced problem assessments and report on recent literature as applied to assigned patients. The student will take night call and attend Queen's regular conferences.
IV. Evaluation
1. Ongoing observational evaluation by the supervising physician will be used to assess the student's acquisition of knowledge and application of this to patient care.
2. There is no formal examination.
3. To obtain credit for this elective, students must complete and return the elective evaluation form to the Department of Medicine.
V. Only University of Hawaii students will be accepted with the approval of the Program Director.
