A. INTRODUCTION
1. Goal of the Clerkship
The goal of the clerkship in the Department of Medicine is to provide the student with the opportunity to gain experience and competence in the principles and practice of Internal Medicine. In order to practice competently, any physician must obtain and retain a large body of knowledge, master the skills of clinical practice, learn the techniques of problem-solving and develop attitudes of compassion, integrity, and self discipline. The chief learning vehicle is the patient, supplemented by systematic study of the curricular content.
It is the student’s responsibility to utilize the clerkship experience to accomplish these goals. It is the Department's responsibility to assure that every graduate of the John A. Burns School of Medicine has, in fact, obtained a satisfactory level of competence in the content of Internal Medicine, which is divided into areas of:
